KARACHI, Oct 23 Three youngsters among four men lost their lives in separate road accidents in the city on Friday, officials said.

However, in all the four accidents responsible drivers managed to run away with the vehicles.

The first accident was reported in Maripur area when a motorcyclist was crushed to death by a fast-moving truck.

“The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Shakil,” said an official at the Maripur police station. “He was the resident of Agra Taj colony and the third of five siblings. He was on his way to work when the tragedy took place.”

The police later shifted the dead body to the Civil Hospital Karachi where the family members of the victim did not allow the legal formalities by the medico-legal section.

“The family was in extreme shock after losing their loved one and we are waiting for them to come up as a complainant to lodge an FIR,” said the official at the Maripur police station.

In another accident, a 23-year-old man was knocked down by a fast-moving passenger coach in Orangi Town while he was crossing the road. The accident caused a law-and-order situation as the people of the area turned violent after seeing the body of the victim, identified as Kamran.

“Some charged youngsters hurled stones at vehicles on Shahrah-i-Orangi,” said an official at the Orangi Extension police station. “The victim was a resident of Chisti Nagar, situated along Shahrah-i-Orangi. He was killed a few streets away from his home.”

Although the coach escaped after the accident, the area people surrounded the police station demanding the arrest of the responsible driver of the passenger vehicle. The police, who had not registered the FIR for unexplained reasons, later gathered the area elders to defuse the tension.

Almost the same nature of accident was witnessed on Sharea Faisal when a 25-year-old man died after being hit by a speeding coach. The victim was identified as Safdar and a resident of Liaquat Market in Malir. He was crossing the road near Natha Khan Bridge when he was hit by the coach which escaped.

“The victim used to visit Shah Faisal Colony every day to run his shop there,” said an official at the Sharea Faisal police station. “He was returning home during the day and crossing the road to catch the bus from the other side of the Colony Gate bus stop when hit by the speeding coach which escaped.”

He said the police had approached the victim's family and tried to convince them to come forward with a complaint for an FIR but they did not cooperate.

“We will be registering the FIR if our efforts fail to inspire them in the next few hours,” said the official at the Sharea Faisal police station.

By sunset another accident was reported in the Site industrial area, when a car hit an elderly pedestrian who died. The body, which was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, remained unidentified until late. Later the area police shifted the dead body to the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth.

“The man, who appeared to be in his late 50s, was crossing the road near Singer Chowrangi and was hit by a car with no headlights, as conveyed by the eyewitnesses,” said an official at the Shershah police station.
