KARACHI, July 13 A 35-year-old man surrendered himself to the police shortly after he slaughtered his two infant daughters at his house in Landhi on Monday, witnesses and police said.
The police said that the filicide suspect, Mohammed Shahzad, son of Fateh Mohammed, reached the Landhi police station at around 11am to confess that he had slit the throats of 18-month-old Khushi Fatima and nine-month-old Saman Fatima.
The police quoted him as saying that he suspected his wife of having an extramarital affair.
They added that the police seized a kitchen knife the suspect said he had used in the double murder from the suspect's house (No. 534) in Sector 36-D, Landhi, on the lead given by the suspect himself.
The police said that the suspect's elder brother, Mohammed Naeem, lodged a case (FIR 171/2009) against his brother under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The complainant told the police that his younger brother lived in the upper portion of their house. He said that his wife observed blood stains on Shahzad's shirt when he left the house at around 10.30am.
The suspect's brother said that his brother had been living with his wife at the house of his in-laws for the past one week. He said that Shahzad brought his daughters in the morning without telling his wife and he slaughtered the two infants in his room.
They quoted the suspect's brother as saying that Shahzad married some four years ago against the consent of his family.
The police said the suspect claimed that he killed his daughters because his wife had an illicit relationship with a man. They quoted the suspect as saying that he also phoned his wife to tell her about the slaughtering of the daughters before he surrendered himself to the police.
Body found
The bullet-riddled body of a man was found at a desolate place near the Qayyumabad graveyard in the remit of the Sohrab Goth police station.
The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where the victim was identified as Noor Ali, son of Noor Ahmed, a resident of Azizabad.
Sources at the hospital's medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim was shot two bullets, one to his head and the other in the left arm.
The police said that the victim, the father of two, had been missing for the past one week and his family had reported his being missing to the area police. They said it could not be immediately ascertained what the victim did for a living. The police said that the victim's family said that he earlier worked in a private security agency.
They said that the body was handed over to the victim's elder brother, Ahmed Ali, after a post-mortem examination.
The police said that no case was registered till late as the police were still waiting for a complainant from the victim's family.
Shot dead
A 28-year-old man was shot dead late in the night in the remit of the Sachal police station.
The police said that the victim was identified as Mujahid, son of Aslam, a resident of Feature Colony in Landhi, and his body was being shifted to hospital for a post-mortem examination.
They said that the wounds on the body suggested that the victim, who hailed from Hazara division in the NWFP, received four bullets from a close range.
