Councillors seek monthly salary

Published December 7, 2001

MINGORA, Dec 6: The councillors’ alliance here has strongly criticized the government for not fixing monthly salaries for them and said they too deserved to be given the same incentives recently announced for the Nazims and Naib Nazims.

Hamidullah Khan, a newly elected councillor from the Saidu Sharif area and spokesman for the alliance, in a statement on Thursday said the government had fixed salaries and other incentives for the Nazims and Naib Nazims and ignore the councillors altogether for unknown reasons.

He said the councillors too were elected members like that of the Nazims and Naib Nazims and their rights should be equal. He said the councillors were important part of the government’s local government system, and hailing from the gross roots level knew better how to serve the masses.

A majority of the councillors belonged to the poor families, who wanted to serve the people in a befitting manner. By giving them honorarium, the government would be able to avail their services all the time for success of the new system, the statement added.

Hamidullah said the government had failed to fulfil its commitment with the people, saying that the promises should be materialized in order to build confidence of the people regarding the LG system. He said the government had so far not approved the budgets approved by the districts councils. Otherwise it would have allocated funds for the development schemes.

He asked the authorities to keep vigil on prices of the daily-use items and ensure proper display of the price lists, so that the price hike could be controlled to some extent.

MAN KILLED: One person was shot dead and his wife seriously injured by some unknown people in the Belogram village on Wednesday night.

The same night, some unknown persons entered the house of the deceased and opened indiscriminate firing, which resulted in the death of Muhammad Ali and injuries to his wife. The police have registered a case, but the accused are yet to be held.

MISSING: One person has been missing for the last couple of weeks. Umerzada, son of Amir Nawab, resident of Charbagh, mohalla Samir Baba, has been missing for the last couple of weeks and his family members have failed to find his whereabouts.
