Strike observed in Dera Bugti

Published April 13, 2003

QUETTA, April 12: A complete strike was observed in Dera Bugti on Saturday to protest against non-implementation of an agreement ensuring provision of jobs to local people in companies exploring or working on gas or oil projects in the area.

Talking to Dawn by telephone from Dera Bugti, Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, Chief of Jamhoori Watan Party, said that the people of the area observed strike because of the non-implementation of the agreement.

He said recently a top government official had visited the area and promised to redress grievances of the people, including provision of jobs to local people, but this commitment had not been honoured.—Correspondent
