PESHAWAR, April 10: Two former legislators have filed papers for the president of the Peshawar High Court Bar Association on the last date for submitting nominations on Thursday.

Qazi Mohammad Anwar, a former senator, and Latif Afridi, a former MNA, have filed nomination papers in addition to eight others running for the same post.

Qazi Anwar is deputy secretary-general of the Awami National Party and Mr Afridi is secretary-general of the National Awami Party Pakistan. They both have been president of the association in the past.

Prominent among the candidates are Safeerullah Khan, who recently served as president of the bar for two consecutive terms, Arbab Mohammad Usman of the Muttahida Lawyers Forum, Mian Fazal Wahab and Mohammad Jamil Khan of the People’s Lawyers Forum.

The election will be held on April 26. Final list of the candidates will be announced on April 16 after withdrawal of nomination papers on April 15.

The lone female candidate is Neelam A. Khan, contesting for the post of vice-president. Other candidates for the post are Mohammad Isa Khan, Abdullah Sani, Ghulam Nabi, Iftikharuddin Khattak, Roohul Amin and Shahabuddin Burq.

Nine candidates have filed papers for the post of secretary-general. They are Abdullah Sani, Ghulam Nabi, Ishtiaq Ibrahim, Mohammad Farooq Shah, Mohammad Jamil Qamar, Muzamil Khan, Shahabuddin Burq, Tasleem Hussain and Wali Khan Afridi.

Four candidates have filed papers each for the offices of joint secretary and treasurer, whereas three have submitted papers to contest the post of secretary library.

Akhtar Munir Khan has been elected unopposed as member of the executive council for Malakand region. Five are contesting for two posts of the executive council from Peshawar, two for a single seat of Mardan, and three candidates for a single seat of the executive council for Kohat.
