PESHAWAR, April 8: The total strength of the levies and khasadar officials in the Frontier Regions of Bannu and Lakki is 887 against a population of 26,505. So there is one official for every 29 residents of the regions.
According to the statistics available with Dawn regarding the strength of these forces in the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas, the strength of levies and khasadars in the Bajaur Agency is 1,948 against a population of 596,675 people, which means there is one official for every 306 tribesmen of the area. The strength of law enforcing agencies against the number of people they are supposed to provide security to in other agencies, goes as follows: Mohmand Agency population 331,1596 and levies/khasadars 2,320; Khyber Agency population 534,383 and levies/khasadars 2,753; Orakzai Agency population 223,885 and levies/khasadars 2,283; Kurram Agency population 471,624 and levies/khasadars 1,951; North Waziristan Agency population 357,867 and levies/khasadars 3,265; South Waziristan Agency, population, 413,892 and levies/khasadars 3,689; Malakand Agency, 366,000, and levies/khasadars, 1,325.
The FR Peshawar population 53,917 and levies/khasadars 107; FR Kohat, 90,806 and levies/khasadars 668; FR Dera Ismail Khan, population 39,373 and levies/khasadars, 274; and FR Tank population 27,339 and levies/ khasadars, 426.
The federal government has also nominated 35,501 elders, including 2,880 Maliks and 32,571 Lungi Holders, for the total Fata population of 3,167,862, living in seven tribal agencies and five frontier regions.
All the Maliks and Lungi holders are getting financial benefits from the federal government in the form of stipends and they are responsible for maintaining law and order in their respective areas.
The yearly stipends vary according to the sizes of the families of Maliks and Lungi holders. The yearly stipend of a Malik is higher than a Lungi holders.
The federal government has nominated 7,366 Lungi holders in Bajaur Agency. In Mohmand Agency, the total number of Lungi holders are 9,644; in Khyber Agency there are 24 Maliks and 3,723 Lungi holders; in Orakzai Agency, 1 Malik and 8,409 Lungi holders; in Kurram Agency, 1,595 Lungi holders; in North Waziristan Agency 1,368 Maliks and 215 Lungi holders; in South Waziristan Agency, 1,030 Maliks and 371 Lungi holders.
In the FR Peshawar there are 131 Lungi holders; in FR Kohat 942 Lungi holders; in FR Bannu and Lakki 284 Maliks and 89 Lungi holders; in FR Dera Ismail Khan 20 Maliks and 59 Lungi holders; and in FR Tank there are 153 Maliks and 27 Lungi holders.
