MULTAN, Dec 4: The executive district officer (literacy) has not yet appointed district officers for the literacy promotion programme in the district.

The project was chalked-out but posts for DO literacy campaigns, DO for continuation of education and DO vocational education are still vacant.

According to details, programme to raise literacy to 85 per cent in three phases in nine years was finalized.

A survey would be conducted with the help of learning coordinators at the union council level to organize literacy crash programmes for the children who left primary schools. Drop out children of 15 years will be taught at the literacy centres in the existing primary schools by the teachers of the same school in the evening. There will be four such literacy centres in each union council.

Learning coordinators will teach two hours daily to as many classes of 40 students each for adult literacy programme.

A campaign will be launched to educate industrial units’ (registered under the factory act) employees and their dependents.

Efforts will be made to eradicate illiteracy be organizing walks and seminars with the help of volunteers, Nazims, councillors and NGO’s. — Nouman
