DADU, April 7: The district’s education system has collapsed and corruption has eroded the performance of the education department, District Nazim Malik Asad Sikandar said on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference at the local press club, Mr Sikandar accused EDO (education) Qamaruddin Farooqui of having made appointments during a ban on recruitments, saying he had appointed 137 primary and 32 junior school teachers as well as two physical training instructors and four watchmen during the period.

He said that the EDO had also re-appointed two retired officials of the education department, one of them in the BPS-16.

The Nazim also accused the EDO of having granted promotions, move-overs besides awarding selection grades in total disregard to rules and regulations.

Referring to the funds provided by the World Bank for the school management committees, he said that funds in this regard had also been misused.

He also accused the officer of receiving bribes in the shape of commissions and had, therefore, committed offences punishable under anti-corruption laws.

A seven-member inquiry committee, headed by EDO (finance and planning) Noor Mohammad Leghari, had investigated the charges against the EDO (education).

The findings of the inquiry committee would soon be published by the district government, adding that no action was against the EDO (education) despite the fact that the Sindh chief minister, the chief secretary, chairman of the Anti-Corruption Establishment, and the education secretary, had been informed in this regard. He said that a case would soon be referred to the National Accountability Bureau.

ARRESTED: Seven persons were arrested on Monday after the police raided various places on charges of possessing narcotics and other intoxicants.

Those arrested in the raids were identified as Abdullah Jamali, Faqir Mohammad, Sikandar, Faqir Khan, Ghulam Qadir Mallah, Mumtaz and Laeeq.

A huge quantity of hashish, heroin and locally-made wine was recovered from their possession.

SUICIDE: A 20-year-old girl, Farzana, daughter of Allah Bachayo Mallah, on Monday committed suicide by ingesting pesticides in the Wahan village, near Dadu.
