DHAKA, March 31: Former Pakistan Test fast bowler Mohsin Kamal has been replaced as Bangladesh coach by Sarwar Imran on an interim basis, the Bangladesh Cricket Board said on Monday.

Mohsin was sacked a month before the end of his one-year contract, following severe criticism for his team’s poor showing at this year’s World Cup in South Africa.

Bangladesh, a Test nation, went to the World Cup with something to prove and left with even more work to do to establish credibility, having not won a one-day match for four years and 32 matches.

They lost five group games out of six at cricket’s showpiece event, including matches against non-Test sides Kenya and Canada. Their remaining game, against West Indies, ended as a rain-hit draw.

Mohsin, who succeeded Australian coach Trevor Chappell in April last year, was not available for comment on Monday.

Imran, a Bangladeshi who coached Bangladesh on their Test debut, will take up his new assignment from Tuesday, the Bangladesh board said.

His first task will be to guide Bangladesh through a triangular one-day series in Dhaka next month, which also involves South Africa and India.

Bangladesh have named a 15-man squad for the tournament, with former captain Akram Khan and openers Javed Omar and Mehrab Hossain recalled to the squad.

Omar and Hossain replace Al-Shahriar and Hannan Sarkar.

Bangladesh will face India on the opening day of the triangular series on April 11.
