DHAKA, March 29: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Saturday named Khaled Mahmud as skipper of the country’s national cricket team ahead of a tri-nation tournament starting next month.

A BCB spokesman told reporters after a meeting of the board’s advisory committee that Khaled Mahmud would succeed Khaled Mashud, who resigned on personal grounds after Bangladesh’s World Cup debacle.

The World Cup team and its officials are facing an inquiry into Bangladesh’s performance, which the media here said had brought shame on the country.

Mashud has played Test matches as well as more than 25 One-day Internationals.

India, South Africa and hosts Bangladesh are to play a tri-nation tournament starting April 11.

Bangladesh achieved Test status in 2000. Since then they have lost 15 of their 16 Tests with a draw against Zimbabwe in 2002, thanks to rain.—AFP
