GUJRAT, March 28: The government will take action against land grabbers and those who have unlicensed arms, Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi pledged on Friday.

He said this while responding to the newsmen’s questions at the residence of Adnan Naseem Sethi with whom he condoled the death of his father, Naseem Sethi, a prominent industrialist.

The chief minister said the government was making efforts to maintain law and order in the province. Receiving complaints of land grabbing and display of arms, he said the intelligence agencies had been planning to deal with the law-breakers with an iron fist.

When a resident, Amir Butt, complained to the chief minister that an assistant sub-inspector had misbehaved with several families of Ferozeabad, he directed DPO Raja Munawwar to take punitive action against the accused. Allegedly to hush up the case, DIG Malik Iqbal, at this moment, informed the chief minister that the Gujrat police had arrested two proclaimed offenders following an encounter at Jalalpur Jattan on Thursday night.

Mr Elahi directed the DIG to take action against the accused police officer, and also clamp down on the land grabbers.

District Nazim Chaudhry Shafaat Husain, Punjab Education Minister Imran Masood and DCO Agha Nadeem accompanied the chief minister, who later laid the foundation stone of a road project near the small industrial estate.

SIALKOT: During his visit to Sialkot where he condoled the death of Mubashar, who was killed by kidnappers, Mr Elahi said the government was making efforts to make the country a crime-free society.
