Furnace emissions ‘kill’ girl

GUJRANWALA, March 26: Residents blocked Muslim Road by placing the body of a minor girl who died allegedly due to emissions from furnaces here on Wednesday.

Reports said some six furnaces were being run in the populated area of Muslim Road. The residents had repeatedly lodged complaints with the department concerned, but to no avail.

On Wednesday, two-year-old Saira was playing in the courtyard of her house when she fainted reportedly due to emissions from furnaces and died while being taken to hospital.

Later, the heirs and the area people blocked traffic by placing her body on the road.

On receiving information, the police highups reached the spot and assured the protesters that action would be taken against factory owners.

STRIKE: The clerical staff of government functionaries, including education, health and buildings department, went on strike on the call of the All-Pakistan Clerks Association here on Wednesday.

The leaders of the clerical staff, including Tahir Mahmood, Ijazul Hasan, Rana Manzoor and Rana Irshad, said their strike would continue till the acceptance of demands.

REINSTATED: Seventeen sanitary workers of the city tehsil council who were dismissed from service a few months ago were reinstated by the Punjab Labour Court No 7, Gujranwala, on Wednesday.
