HYDERABAD, July 28 Eminent fiction writer, noted columnist and a great satirist, Haleem Brohi, died of heart stroke at a hospital here on Wednesday. He was 75.

He leaves behind wife and four daughters.

He was laid to rest in the Cantonment graveyard after Isha prayers. A large number of people -- including provincial secretary for culture Ahmed Bux Narejo, director-general of culture Mohammad Ali Manjhi, Sindhi Language Authority secretary Taj Joyo, Sindhi Adabi Board secretary Zawar Naqvi, writers, poets and journalists -- attended his last rites.

Born on August 5, 1935, Haleem Brohi was the son of SP Abdul Aziz Brohi. After obtaining law degree, he entered into legal profession and also served in Sindh University in different capacities. He had retired from Sindh University as chief accountant in 1980.

Due to his uncompromising attitude in the world of literature, he was an anathema to pseudo intellectuals and writers who took pride in relations with those in power. He considered literary gatherings as waste of time.

He started writing short stories and articles in 1967 and his first book “Haleem Show” was published in 70s. His novel “Orah” (Inferno) was published in 1975 and another book “Hitler ji Kahani” in 1972. He also worked on Roman script of Sindhi language.

He was a regular contributor to a popular Sindhi daily.

Haleem Brohi was considered the second greatest satirist of Sindhi literature after Ali Mohammad Brohi.

In the year 2009, he was conferred Shah Latif award by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah.
