PESHAWAR, March 19: Nazim Town-1, Peshawar has requested provincial Local Government Commission (LGC) to convene its meeting so that prevailing financial dispute could be resolved with the city district government.

The Nazim, Mr Haroon Bilour, told Dawn here on Wednesday that he had requested chairman of the LGC to call a meeting for the purpose.

“We have requested the chairman to hold a session of the commission to solve this outstanding issue once and for all,” Mr Bilour said. Under the rules provincial minister for local government heads the commission.

The administration of Town-1 and the city district government have a dispute over the transfer of assets and liabilities of the defunct Municipal Corporation as the former claimed that the latter had held all sources of income which was absolutely repugnant to the local government ordinance.

According to the ordinance, Town-1 administration believed city district government should have to transfer all income-generating sectors of the defunct municipal corporation to the management of the town council to meet its expenditures.

Due to the poor financial position the Town-1 administration obtained Rs eight million on 10 per cent interest from the city district government in January last to pay the salaries of the staff.

The administration of Town-1 has estimated to earn Rs 140 million income annually in the head of property rent, bus terminals, exhibitions and entry fee on parks, if city district government withdrew its claim.
