HYDERABAD, March 19: Former Interior Minister Moinuddin Haider has urged scholars to use their knowledge and abilities in promotion of education and betterment of the society.
He was speaking as chief guest at a ceremony at the Institute of Sindhology, Jamshoro, on Tuesday in which a book, “Surha Gul Sindh Ja” (perfumed flowers of Sindh), written by Dr Abdul Jabar Abid Leghari, was introduced.
Mr Haider said scholars and educationists should jointly work for development of school education and teachers should also play their role in promotion of education.
He appealed to philanthropists to support poor students to get education and also cooperate with the government in establishing schools in rural areas.
He appreciated Dr Leghari for the services he had rendered in the promotion of Sindhi literature, especially his work on prominent personalities of Sindh.
The vice-chancellor, University of Sindh, Mazharul Haq Siddiqui, also praised Dr Leghari for writing a book on prominent personalities of the province and expressed the hope the scholar would continue his work to promote Sindhi literature.
He announced other books of Dr Leghari would also be published by the institute.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Leghari said he had written articles and life sketches of 200 prominent personalities of the country.
He said in this he had included 23 life sketches of prominent personalities.
Institute of Sindhology director Shaukat Hussain Shoro presented a set of books, published by the institute, to the chief guest.
On this occasion, Fateha was offered for noted scholar Late Karim Bux Khalid who died on Monday in Karachi.
AWAMI TEHRIK: A group of the activists of the Awami Tehrik observed a token hunger strike outside the press club here on Sunday.
They were protesting against an attack on Ashraf Palijo, a leader of the Stop Tyranny Committee, Thatta.
Talking to journalists, Saindad Khaskheli and others said on the one hand Ashraf was attacked and on the other, he was arrested by the Daro police and was being tortured.
They demanded action against SHO Zamir Hussain Baig.
DOCTORS: A group of contract doctors, under the banner of the Contract Doctors Forum, Hyderabad, held a demonstration outside the press club here on Sunday, demanding regularization of their services.
Led by Dr Mohammad Khan, the doctors demanded of the Sindh cabinet committee to ensure they were immediately regularized.
AZU: The Azad Hari Union Sindh, has criticized the prime minister for his statement that there is no need of land reforms in the country.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, union members stressed the need for implementing previously announced agricultural reforms, as well as introducing more reforms and distributing land among peasants.
They warned peasants would launch a joint movement if the feudal system was not abolished.
