KARACHI, March 17: A young man died in crossfire between the police and suspected bandits in New Karachi on Monday.

The dead man was identified as Shakil Ahmed. He had powerloom business and was overseeing construction work at his factory when he was hit by several bullets. He died on the spot.

However, the New Karachi police denied that a police encounter had taken place and said that Shakil died by the firing of unknown persons.

According to the investigation police, the police received a tip-off that two suspects riding a motorcycle were near Umar Khan Library in sector 5-B-3, New Karachi. A police party was sent there. When the suspects saw the police mobile, led by SI Aurangzeb, they opened fire at the police party.

The police returned the fire. As a result, one of the suspects, identified as Umar, fell from the motorcycle. He was arrested. His accomplice, Muzaffar Bhutto, escaped.

The police said that Muzaffar Bhutto was wanted in several criminal cases. The investigation police claimed to have recovered a pistol loaded with four bullets from Umar.

KILLED: A five-year-old boy was found murdered in a building in Tariq Road.

The police said that boy Ziaullah, aged five, was found murdered on the rooftop of Yaseen Centre in Tariq Road. He was throttled to death.

The body was sent to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for post- mortem.

The police said that Zia’s father, Rahmatullah, a driver, had two wives. Habiba was Zia’s mother.

Zia had gone to see his step-mother, Afghan Gul, in Yaseen Centre where she worked.

“According to Habiba’s statement, which she recorded to the police, she had a quarrel with Afghan Gul two days ago during which the latter had threatened to kill the former’s son,” the police said.

BEATEN TO DEATH: An alleged bandit died when he was beaten up by people in Ranchhor Lines late Sunday night.

Two armed suspects entered a house in Marwari Colony and began collecting valuables. After the family raised alarm neighbours came to their help.

The bandits ran out of the house and began firing. A pedestrian, identified as Rahman, was injured in the firing.

The area people got hold of one of the bandits and gave him a severe beating. His accomplice escaped. The injured bandit died before he could be taken to hospital, the police said.
