MMA invites all parties to march

LAHORE, March 16: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal has invited all political and religious parties besides minorities representatives to its March 23 million-man march against the impending US attack on Iraq.

The six-party religious alliance has already organized two such marches —- one each in Karachi and Rawalpindi on March 3 and 9, respectively.

Briefing reporters about targets set for Lahore march, MMA Punjab president Hafiz Muhammad Idrees said at least 1.5 million people would attend the event as workers had been directed to go door-to-door to convince the people in this regard.

Qari Zawwar Bahadur, Amir Husain Gilani, Maulana Amjad Khan and others were also present in the briefing.

Hafiz Idrees said the city had been divided into six towns to properly organize the event while people from the other cities of the province would also attend it.

He told a questioner that the PPP would also take part in the march for he believed that its high command would allow its workers in this respect.

Answering a question, he said the protest was being organized absolutely on the Iraq issue so the government would not hinder it.

About the ban on holding rallies on The Mall, he said the administration had given them a green signal, saying no such ban would be enforced on demonstrations held on the Iraq issue.

He said a component of the MMA was being maligned through FBI raids to quell the anti-US voice of the alliance. He termed the US aid following lifting sanctions on Pakistan a lollipop.
