HYDERABAD, March 15: Taking notice of the Punjab irrigation secretary’s statement that Sindh has no objection to the construction of Kalabagh dam or any other dam on the River Indus, the Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party has observed that it is simply unthinkable for Sindh to accept the construction of dams on the river.
In a statement issued here on the other day, STPP chairman Dr Qadir Magsi said that Sindh had always opposed the construction of dams for the simple reason that they would destroy the agrarian economy of the province.
He reminded the Punjab irrigation secretary that the provincial assemblies of Sindh, Balochistan and the NWFP had already rejected the construction of Kalabagh dam and tens of thousands of people of Sindh had held a series of protest demonstrations against the proposed construction of dams.
He said that a large number of seminars and workshops had also been held on the subject.
He also took strong exception to remarks of the Punjab irrigation secretary that water flow of Sutlaj and Chenab rivers would be diverted to irrigate the desert area of Punjab.
He wondered why a provincial secretary was issuing statements on such matters which fell under the domain of the federal government.
CAMPAIGN: A province-wide protest campaign will be launched if the formula for the National Finance Commission Award is not changed.
This was stated by chairman of the Sindh Taraqqi Passand Party Dr Qadir Magsi while speaking at a meeting of the party workers at the Taraqqi Passand House on the other day.
He criticized the present formula for the NFC Award.
