Increase in fares flayed

Published March 12, 2003

GUJRANWALA, March 11: Commuters have opposed the agreement between government and transporters regarding enhancement of fares and demanded that the government should reduce prices of petroleum products instead of enhancing the fares.

Talking to this reporter, people from different walks of life said here on Tuesday that transporters had already been increasing fares arbitrarily in connivance with the authorities concerned whenever petroleum prices were increased.

They said that vehicle owners were receiving Rs5 for the distance between one stop and the next and Rs8 to 10 for 12 to 15km.

They urged the government not to the yield to the demand of transporters without taking the ground realities into account.

VEHARI: People complained that local transporters had been overcharging commuters since the recent increase in petrol prices. They urged the authorities concerned to take stock of the situation.
