KARACHI, Nov 29: Traffic in some Lyari areas came to a standstill on Thursday as a charged crowd, protesting against water shortage, took to streets.

Hundreds of inhabitants of Nayabad and Kumela Bus Stop, blocked the main road against water shortage. They pelted the vehicles with stones and disrupted traffic and forced closure of shops. They staged sit-ins.

The leaders of Pasban urged the Nazim to come to the rescue of Lyariites and ensure normal water supply.

Similarly, water shortage persists in Malir-Khokhrapar area in Sectors G, H, Saudia Colony and parts of Saudabad, F South etc. Area people said that water being supplied to the locality from the Pipri source was insufficient to cater to the needs of sprawling Malir, because of increasing population. They said since the introduction of Airport valve on the main system, the water quota for Malir-Khokhrapar had drastically been cut and this quota was not increased during the last ten years as a result, the people were at the mercy of tanker mafia.—PPI/APP
