Kalabagh dam opposed

Published March 2, 2003

SHIKARPUR, March 1: Federal Railways Minister Ghaus Bux Khan Mahar has said he is not in favour of the Kalabagh dam because it is opposed by the people of Sindh.

However, he said other dams should be constructed to overcome the water shortage.

Talking to newsmen here on Friday, he said efforts were being made to improve the railway system.

He said that in order to provide better facilities to the people, locomotives, bogies, coaches and other necessary equipment were being purchased from China and Australia.

He said schemes designed for renovation and reconstruction of railway tracks, railway crossings and bogies would soon be implemented.

Referring to vacant posts in the Pakistan Railways, the minister said these vacancies would be filled on merit basis and interviews for some posts were under process.
