Waugh’s Test future remains clouded

SYDNEY, Feb 24: Steve Waugh says he is hitting the ball as sweetly as ever after blasting New South Wales to victory in the domestic one-day cricket cup on Sunday.

But the 37-year-old’s playing future in Test cricket still remains unresolved.

An announcement on the Australian side for the April tour to the West Indies was due in mid-March and on recent form Waugh appeared certain to lead the side.

His adventurous 88 off 55 balls against Western Australia in the cup final in Perth on Sunday helped the Blues to their third consecutive victory in the tournament.

“I’ve been playing like that for the last month,” Waugh said after belting 16 fours and one six.

“Up until a year ago I’ve been playing like that for ten years. People have got short memories, I’m still not a bad player.”

Yesterday’s innings continued a rich vein of scoring form for Waugh since his memorable hundred in the fifth and final Ashes Test against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Jan 3.—AFP
