KARACHI, Feb 24: The City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan, has opposed privatization of educational institutions, saying that it would further deteriorate educational system.

“However, most of the institutions have been turned into an industry which has posed serious financial hardship to the poor and in view of the gravity of the situation, the city government is contemplating on regulating their fee structures and a positive decision in this regard would soon be taken,” he said speaking at a Naat competition at the St Joseph College for Women on Monday.

Referring to the overwhelming spread of Kutchi Abadis in Karachi, he said people living in these localities constituted 52 per cent of the total population of the city and they were unable to admit their children to private educational institutions.

He said before the establishment of the city government, educational institutions, especially the primary ones, remained in a pathetic condition. However, he added, during the last 16 months sincere and integrated efforts have been made to streamline education standard, creating conducive environment in the institutions and enhancing the overall standard of education.—PPI
