KARACHI, Nov 28: A proposed formula to share resources between the City Government and towns was discussed at a meeting here on Wednesday.

The meeting, presided over by Sindh Local Government Minister Dewan Mohammed Yousuf Farooqui, constituted a committee to make recommendations regarding the formula by Dec 10.

The committee, to be headed by the additional secretary of local government, comprises City Government Finance EDO and a representative from Corps-5.

It will suggest how to distribute the federal government grants in lieu of octroi, which earlier used to be distributed among the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and district municipal corporations.

The committee will also suggest a formula for the distribution of the income of defunct district council, Karachi, among 178 union councils.

The meeting, which also discussed the revival of sea dues, formed another committee to make recommendations regarding the issue.

This committee includes Privatization Commission Chairman Syed Nasir Ali Shah Bukhari, PERK Vice-Chairman Shahid Firoz and the Karachi DCO.

The minister directed the members of the both the committees to work out a sharing formula in a manner that no injustice was done to any area.

Among others, the meeting was attended among others by Additional Chief Secretary (Development) Shahzado Shaikh, Secretary Finance, Falzur rehman, Secretary Local Government Maj Qamar Zaman and other officers.

In the previous setup, 16.33 per cent of the resources were allocated for the DMC Central, 15.83 per cent for the DMC East, 12.92 percent for the DMC South, 12.51 per cent for the DMC West and 9.41 per cent for the DMC Malir.

Now 18 towns have been carved out from the local areas of five DMCs and the district council Karachi.

The income of the district council is to be distributed among 178 union councils of Karachi.— APP
