Published February 20, 2003

KARACHI, Feb 19: The Parliamentary Party of the PPP Parliamentarians met here on Wednesday to discuss a strategy vis-a-viz the Feb 22 requisitioned session of Sindh Assembly as well as the Senate elections amid alleged horse-trading attempts by the ruling party.

Presiding over the meeting, Nisar Khuhro, Leader of the Opposition in the assembly, highlighted the issues raised in its requisition and told the legislators to be vigilant against coercive measures allegedly being employed by the ruling party.

On February 8, the PPP Parliamentarians had submitted an application, signed by 57 members, for requisitioning the session to discuss urgent matters of vital public interest. The topics on the agenda include Thal Canal project, the alleged undue interference by the provincial government in the affairs and administration of the recently introduced system of District Government, grant of total remission of all the provincial taxes to Abadgars, and holding of up to 25 acres of agricultural land.

Other subjects on the agenda are reconsideration and modification of the Lyari Expressway and measures to stop massive migration of fishermen from Manchar Lake.

Mr Khuhro had, on Jan 18, requisitioned the session to discuss the NFC Award, law and order, increase in unemployment rate and continued ban on recruitments in the province, effects of the Thal canal project, its consequences and the steps taken by the provincial government.
