HYDERABAD, Feb 18: The sewerage system of Hyderabad collapsed due to heavy rainfall and low-lying areas in the district are submerged by water, causing damages to buildings.

This was said by District Nazim Dr Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman while presiding over a meeting of district officers, held at his office here on Tuesday.

The meeting reviewed measures adopted by the district government for rescue operation in affected areas of the district.

The meeting was informed that 13 relief camps had been established for shifting and helping rain-affected people at various school buildings in Gru Nagar, Allahdad Chand Goth, Islamabad, Fort area, Tando Agha, Phulelli and Misri Shah.

It was told that emergency measures regarding vaccination against malaria, cholera and other diseases had been taken in affected areas and medical camps had also been set up in these areas.

DPO A. D. Khuwaja, said the district police were helping rescue teams in shifting people to safer places.

He said the police had declared the Madadgar 15 as the emergency centre which would function round-the-clock.

Dr Rafiquzzaman said the district government was making efforts to provide relief to people and added that Rs5 million had been borrowed from the district council to meet immediate needs of the people and to drain out the rainwater from low-lying areas.

He appealed to NGOs, working in Hyderabad, to assist the district government in the relief work.

Later, the district Nazim visited the police emergency centre and met affected peo-ple.

He assured the people the district government would take measures to rehabilitate them.

CM ADVISOR: The advisor to the Sindh chief minister, Aftab Ahmad Shaikh, and the provincial minister for local government, Kutchi Abadis, and special development, Mohammad Hussain Khan, on Tuesday visited rain-affected areas of Hyderabad.
