JAIPUR (India), Nov 27: India’s cricket selectors have retained left-hander Saurav Ganguly as captain for their three-Test series against England starting next week.

“Ganguly has been selected for the entire series,” Niranjan Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said on Tuesday in Jaipur, where England are playing their last tour match before the tests.

Ganguly was one of the six players penalised by match referee Mike Denness during the drawn second test against South Africa in Port Elizabeth last week.

Shah also said paceman Javagal Srinath, who broke his finger during the unofficial Test against South Africa that ended in Centurion on Tuesday, would not be playing in the first Test starting in Mohali next Monday.

Indian selectors will name a 14-member squad for the Test on Wednesday. There is speculation that if they pick banned batsman Virender Sehwag for the game, the England series could be in jeopardy.

Borde said Ganguly was not fully fit after missing the unofficial test in Centurion because of neck and back spasms.

“Doctors have seen him. He is now 70 percent fit,” he said, but expected Ganguly to fully recover before the Mohali game.

England are also scheduled to play a one-day series in the new year after returning home for a Christmas break following the Tests.—Reuters
