MIRPURKHAS Feb 17: Heavy thunderstorm on Monday paralyzed civic life in the city and the situation was compounded by the disappearance of public transport and suspension of power supply.

Rain, which spelled miseries for the people of the city, brought joy to the water-starved growers, who had been facing shortage of irrigation water for a long time.

Heavy downpour, which began in early morning, continued intermittently for several hours, inundated the low-lying areas.

Knee-deep rain water, which had accumulated on the roads and streets, exposed the inefficiency of the sanitary staff and the Taluka Municipal Administration.

Main markets remained closed in the absence of buyers while attendance in offices and educational institutions remained negligible because of the absence of public transport from the city roads.

The power supply, which was suspended soon after the beginning of the thunderstorm, was restored after a gap of 10 hours.

Reports of rainfall were also received from Mirwah, Digri, Kot Ghulam Mohammad, Naukot, Samaro, Kunri, Umerkot, Mithi, Diplo, Chachro and Islam Kot.

Meanwhile, three women were injured on Monday after a wall collapsed in the Sachedino Panhwar village near Bilaro Shakh.

The injured were identified as Sharifa, 50, Khadija 50, and Safora, 20.

They were later shifted to the Civil Hospital, Mirpurkhas.
