Brisk buying of animals

Published February 12, 2003

LAHORE, Feb 11: Over 250,000 sacrificial animals were sold at over 30 authorized and unauthorized markets and on roads and in streets here on Tuesday.

Most animals were sold out during brisk buying which started at noon and continued till midnight. Only a limited number of animals were left for sale on Eid and Tarru days.

As a large number of animals were available, the owners, unlike the practice in the past few weeks, were eager to sell of their animals at negotiable prices. This helped both the sellers and the buyers to do the deal.

Goats were the first preference of most of the buyers. Sheep were bought only by those who could not afford the purchase of a goat or wanted to buy a heavier animal for the same price. Cows and camels were purchased mainly by the sponsors of collective sacrifice like the mosques and seminaries.

The price of an average goat was reduced from Rs10,000 to Rs6,000 whereas a very good animal could be purchased for Rs8,000 to 10,000. A good sheep was available for Rs6,000 and a cow and camel for Rs12,000 to Rs18,000.
