GUJRANWALA, Feb 7: An income tax recovery officer who humiliated a shopkeeper over the tax issue was suspended from service here on Friday.

Zahid Saleem raided the shop of Hafizur Rehman at Chowk Pondanwala, Pasrur Road, and arrested him as he misplaced his income tax receipt.

He also seized his other documents besides humiliating him. When he produced the tax receipt of payment and other record, the enraged recovery officer threw all the record in his shop and slipped away.

The shopkeepers already gathered there protested against the attitude of the income tax recovery officer. Later, a delegation of traders, including the victim, met income tax commissioner Farooq Tahir and informed him about the incident.

The traders demanded that a stern action should be taken against the recovery officer otherwise they would go on a shutter-down strike.

Taking immediate action, the income tax commissioner suspended the recovery officer and issued him a show-cause notice. He also ordered an inquiry against the income tax recovery officer.
