Water scarcity to affect wheat crop

Published February 7, 2003

DERA GHAZI KHAN, Feb 6: The wheat production will affect greatly due to the scarcity of water as only 5,500 cusecs of water is being discharged in three main canals from Taunsa Barrage as against 29,500 cusecs in Dera division.

After a month-long closure of canals due to the desiltation campaign, only 18 per cent water has so far been discharged. At least 3,500 cusecs of water has been discharged in D.G. Khan Canal and 1,000 cusecs each in T.P Link Canal and Muzzafargarh Canal as against their capacity of 9,500, 12,000 and 8,000 cusecs, respectively.

The wheat crop has been sown over an area of more than 1.5 million acres in D.G. Khan, Layyah, Rajanpur and Muzzafargarh districts.
