TOKYO, Jan 31: Her mind anywhere but in Tokyo, Jelena Dokic crashed out of the $1.3 million Pan Pacific Open on Friday, beaten 6-4 6-2 by doubles specialist Lisa Raymond in a lopsided quarterfinal.
Meanwhile, top seed Monica Seles repelled a brave fightback from Russian qualifier Lina Krasnoroutskaya, winning 6-4 6-4 to reach the semi-finals at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
Lindsay Davenport’s 7-5 7-6 victory over Tamarine Tanasugarn in the evening session means that the last four will be made up exclusively of American players for the first time since 1989.
Dokic had chosen to kick off her season in Japan for the second year running but the second seed looked disinterested and disenchanted from the start against a pumped-up Raymond.
The 19-year-old Yugoslav, who missed the Australian Open again this year, had at least avoided the same fate as befell her in 2002, when she lost her season-opener to Anne Kremer here.
But the speed with which Dokic fell apart after dropping the first set left organisers with another headache following the withdrawals of Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati and Anna Kournikova before the start of the tournament.
Raymond, who saved two match points in her second-round win over fifth seed Magdalena Maleeva, secured the crucial break to lead 4-3 and the American held her nerve to take the first set.
Raymond easily wrapped up victory in a shade under one hour as a demoralised Dokic stopped chasing balls that were out of her hitting zone.
Showing no signs of the sprained ankle that contributed to her second-round exit at the Australian Open, Seles had all the answers on the big points against the big-hitting Krasnoroutskaya.
The 29-year-old suffered a brief letdown midway through the second set when she allowed Krasnoroutskaya to win four games in a row to level at 4-4.
But normal service was quickly resumed and Seles closed out proceedings on her second match point when a wild forehand from Krasnoroutskaya sailed long after 79 minutes on court.
The nine-times grand slam winner will play Chanda Rubin in the semifinals. The fourth-seeded Rubin recovered from an erratic start to beat Russian eighth seed Elena Dementieva 3-6 6-1 6-3.
However, third seed Davenport was anything but satisfied after an error-strewn display against Thai player Tanasugarn.
Results: (quarterfinals): Lindsay Davenport bt Tamarine Tanasugarn 7-5 7-6 (7-3); Lisa Raymond bt Jelena Dokic 6-4 6-2; Monica Seles bt Lina Krasnoroutskaya 6-4 6-4; Chanda Rubin bt Elena Dementieva 3-6 6-1 6-3
MILAN1: French qualifier Julien Varlet saved two match points before squeezing past fourth seed Xavier Malisse 2-6 7-5 7-6 at the $380,000 Milan Indoors tournament on Thursday.
The unheralded 25-year-old refused to be intimidated by Belgian Malisse, a semi-finalist at Wimbledon last year, as he carved out the biggest win of his career.
Fifth seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov reached his first quarter-final of the year when he defeated Denmark’s Kristian Pless 6-4 6-3.
The Russian will meet Swedish qualifier Jonas Bjorkman, who ousted local favourite Andrea Gaudenzi 6-2 6-1, in the last eight.
Defending champion Davide Sanguinetti of Italy saved three match points before defeating Max Mirnyi of Belarus 1-6 6-3 7-6.
Second round results:
Davide Sanguinetti bt Max Mirnyi 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8/6); Ivan Ljubicic bt Dominik Hrbaty 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (8/6), 6-4; Jonas Bjorkman bt Andrea Gaudenzi 6-2, 6-1; Julien Varlet bt Xavier; Malisse 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8/6); Yevgeny Kafelnikov bt Kristian Pless 6-4, 6-3.—Reuters/AFP
