NAUSHAHRO FEROZE, Jan 30: A large number of growers of Naulakhi Minor took out a rally from Kandiaro and blocked the National Highway on Thursday.
They were protesting against the irrigation officials for diverting water, meant for Naulakhi Minor — which fed land of Kandiaro taluka — to Khairpur district through Siyal Minor, Mirwah Minor, Gadeji Minor and Hingorja Minor.
Mohabbat Dero town remained closed in support of the growers’ demand to restore water supply .
The rally, led by Mohabbat Dero union council Nazim Abdul Ghaffar Dahraj and Khan Wahan UC Nazim Maqsood Ahmed Khushk, emerged from the growers’ hunger strike camp opposite the National Bank roundabout.
When the participants reached near Jam Noorullah village, they blocked the National Highway for two hours by staging a sit- in and setting tyres ablaze.
Talking to journalists, Mr Khushk deplored that the growers of Kandiaro taluka were being denied of their water share.
They claimed that due to water diversion, two waterways of Kandiaro taluka, Moria and Mahesar minors, had been rendered dry.
Meanwhile, the district police officer reached at the spot and assured the protesters that the issue would be taken up with the irrigation minister and officials.
On the assurance, the protesters ended their sit-in and hunger strike.
Later, the growers held a meeting with the DCO, Naushahro Feroze.
When contacted, DCO Mohammad Naeem Malik said that he tried to contact the Sindh chief minister and the irrigation minister but they were not available owing to the Sindh Assembly session.
