NEW DELHI, Jan 29: Police on Wednesday ruled out any terrorist involvement in a security breach of Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s motorcade, which prompted shots to be fired at the errant vehicle.

The Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency quoted Delhi’s police chief as saying terrorism did not figure in the incident on Tuesday night as Vajpayee’s motorcade escorted him from the airport to his official residence.

“It was just a case of impatient persons wanting to move out fast,” the police official said.

Earlier on Wednesday, another senior police official said two men and a woman were being questioned for having breached security around the motorcade as it sped through the Indian capital.

Preliminary investigations revealed that “the driver of the car seemed to be in an inebriated state”, he said.

The premier’s security guards opened fire on a car when it strayed into the motorcade at an intersection, a police spokesman said. Vajpayee was returning home after a brief visit to Mumbai.—AFP
