HYDERABAD, Jan 29: The director, Iqbal Academy, Mohammad Sohail Umer, and the chairman, Sindhi Adabi Board, Ghulam Rabbani Agro, have expressed profound sorrow over the death of Prof Dr Annemarie Schimmel, an acknowledged authority on Allama Iqbal, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai and Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi.

In a joint statement issued here on Tuesday, they said that Dr Schimmel was born in Oefurt, Germany, in 1929 and was the author of many books and hundreds of articles.

The offices of the Sindhi Adabi Board (SAB), Jamshoro, on Wednesday remained closed to mourn the death of the renowned German scholar.

She had a wide range of admirers and friends in Pakistan, including Javed Iqbal, the late Pir Hishamuddin Rashidi, Akram Chughtai, and Ghulam Rabbani Agro himself.

Her books have been published by some publishers in Pakistan. Her essays were also published in the form of a book by the Sindhi Adabi Board.

She had translated the short stories of Jamal Abro and Ghulam Rabbani Agro in German.

The late scholar was a great friend of Pakistan and her attachment to Sindh was legendary.
