PESHAWAR, Jan 27: Secretary general of Jamaat-i-Islami Syed Munawar Hassan said here on Sunday that the United Nations had failed to show its impartiality in the current US-Iraq standoff.

Addressing the Jamaat-i-Islami’s provincial Shoora meeting here at Al-Markaz-i-Islami, Mr Hassan said the UN had become a party in the current Gulf crisis.

According to a press release issued by the party, he said in addition to the neighbouring countries, three permanent members of the Security Council were also opposed to any attack on Iraq. Despite all this, the United States was still bent upon mounting an attack on Baghdad.

He said that Turkey, Egypt and other Islamic countries had adopted a bold stand and condemned the US policy towards Iraq.

He urged the Muslim heads of states to side with the people of Iraq, otherwise they would also have to face a similar situation very soon.

He said Pakistan could become the next target if the Jamali government did not change its policies.

Provincial chief of JI Professor Mohammad Ibrahim said that after killing innocent people in Afghanistan in the name of the so-called “war on terror”, America had planned to target Iraqi people.

He condemned the presence of FBI on Pakistani soil, saying it posed a threat to the national security.
