KARACHI, April 28: In the wake of the bomb attacks and serious security fears, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement cancelled a public meeting for women scheduled for Sunday at the Jinnah Ground.

However, a spokesman for the MQM said that the meeting was postponed due to “some unavoidable reasons”.

MQM leader Wasay Jalil said the party would not boycott the elections and those plotting to stop it from contesting the general elections would not succeed.

Over the past couple of days, more than a dozen people were killed in three bomb attacks on as many elections offices of the MQM near the People’s Chowrangi in North Nazimabad, Nusrat Bhutto Colony and Qasba Colony.

Meanwhile, MQM chief Altaf Hussain contacted President Asif Ali Zardari and Awami National Party chief Asfandyar Wali to exchange views on the prevailing situation in the country.

According to a statement issued by the MQM, Mr Hussain talked to President Zardari by phone on Saturday evening. The leaders agreed on the need for unity among moderate political parties against the rising wave of terrorism against them. Mr Hussain and President Zardari talked of a plot to keep the MQM and PPP out of the electoral process by carrying out bomb attacks on their offices and offered condolences to each other on the death of their workers. Mr Hussain and the ANP chief also discussed incidents of terrorism against liberal and progressive political parties and talked about their future line of action.
