KARACHI: Walk for children

Published January 26, 2003

KARACHI, Jan 25: The Sindh Girl Guides Association is organizing a walk on Sunday morning to highlight the rights of the child. The event will begin from the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah at 10am.

The walk will be led by Karachi Nazim Naimatullah Khan, the patron of Sindh Girl Guides Association, Khadija Soomro, artist and social worker Jimmy Engineer, and the guides’ provincial commissioner, Moeena Hidayatullah, said a press release of the Pakistan Girl Guides Association.

The handout said that through the walk the guides would be underscoring: the children’s right to be happy, their right to be heard; their right to learn; their right to live in peace; and, their right to work together.

“We are calling for the leaders to listen to the voices of our youth,” said the press release. “Therefore, they must be given every opportunity to develop into responsible and loyal citizens, conscious of their rights and responsibilities.”

The country would only make progress, and be able to play its due role in the world community, when the child’s rights are respected and safeguarded, added the handout.
