SHIKARPUR, Jan 24: Efforts are being made to settle tribal feuds, particularly the 12-year-old dispute between the Mahar and Jatoi tribes but the non-cooperative attitude of tribal chieftains was hampering progress in this regard.

This was stated by the District Police Officer of Shikarpur, Abdul Khaliq Shaikh, while talking to newsmen at his office here on Friday.

He said that the Jirga, held on Jan 17, had been postponed because of the no-cooperative attitude of the chieftains of the Jatoi and the Mahar tribes.

He said that he was very hopeful as the Sindh Chief Minister Ali Mohammad Khan Mahar would make sincere efforts to resolve the Mahar-Jatoi dispute through an Awami Adalat, if the tribal chiefs failed to extend cooperation regarding holding of a Jirga once again.

The district police and the local administration were making efforts to curb crimes to restore peace in the district.

The DPO also advised the people of all tribes to press their chieftains and other prominent people for holding a Jirga to settle all outstanding disputes.

Meanwhile, The Jamaat-i-Islami, Shikarpur district, has appealed the chief justice to order an judicial investigation into the tribal disputes of the district.

A resolution, passed at a JI meeting, here on Friday, demanded that the Supreme Court judges should conduct the inquiry, which should be followed by a severe action against those, held responsible for the disputes.
