KARACHI, Jan 23: More than 100 residential units in the Baghdadi area of Lyari have been receiving contaminated water for the past few days, a survey of the locality shows.

It is feared that if early remedial measures are not taken, gastro-intestinal and other diseases would increase multifold as complaints have also been made in the past in this regard.

The residents of the affected units say that water is being supplied to the locality under the alternate-day system

introduced two months back after the eruption of water-related disturbances in the locality.

They complain that even under the alternate water system, many residential units do not get proper water supply and are compelled to fetch water from other localities.

Those living in the area adjoining Fidha Husain Sheika Road are the worst-affected. They do not know what time the supply will be restored. Often they have to wait till midnight, and whenever the supply is restored, it is often polluted, stinking and unfit for human consumption.

An old woman of the area said it seemed somewhere sewage was mixing with water, and as a result gastrointestinal diseases had become common in the locality.

Baghdadi has been one of the water-deficit areas in Lyari where water-related distubances have become a regular feature.

The alternate-day-supply system introduced by the authorities concerned to overcome the water shortage problem is not being operated effectively.
