MULTAN, Jan 22: Traders of the Cantonment markets took out a procession here on Wednesday as part of their ongoing protest drive against police for their failure to track down the culprits involved in the murder of a businessman.

Malik Manzoor Awan was shot dead by some unidentified assailants in the Main Cantonment Bazaar last month, but the police have yet to resolve the mystery of his murder.

The protest procession ended at the Bohra Street where the Anjuman-i-Tajran leaders addressed and alleged that the Multan police had failed to ensure safety of life and property to the people.

They announced that a protest demonstration would be held on Thursday at shopping centre No 3 of the area, while the protest drive would be extended to the entire city by Jan 25.

Later on, the protesters dispersed peacefully.

AMP: The Anjuman-i-Mazareen Punjab has condemned the management of Okara military farms and the Rangers for arresting innocent tenants whose only mistake is the demand for proprietary rights against their tenancy lands.

In a press statement here on Wednesday, AMP chairman Younas Iqbal and secretary-general Dr Christopher John claimed that the Rangers had arrested dozens of tenants from various villages of Okara farms during a couple of days.

They said the son of AMP’s incarcerated president Khushi Dola had also been arrested. Fakhar was taken into custody reportedly when he went to the Okara Cantonment police station to serve meal to his father.

The AMP leaders termed the Rangers acts ‘sheer atrocities’ and violation of human rights. They said all the arrested tenants were being confined at an unknown place. They warned that if the Rangers did not stop pressure tactics to force the tenants to accept the lease system, the AMP would launch a protest drive in all major cities of the province.

Meanwhile, reports said tenants staged protest rallies in various villages of the military farms to protest against the continuous siege and arrests.
