RAWALPINDI: At a government girls’ primary school, housed in a dilapidated rented house in Talhi Moori, a wall collapsed because of torrential rains on Wednesday. At least six students were injured.

Around 160 children are enrolled in the school.

When the wall collapsed, people nearby came to help with rescue work.

Mehboob Sabir, a Tahli Moori resident, told Dawn that “the children panicked, some of them were screaming, others were running away.” The teaching staff, he added, were also scared.

Emergency services provided first aid to a few children who had sustained bruises. Two children, however, were taken to a private clinic, where they were treated for their injuries.

“As such, it was not a serious issue,” Rawlapindi DCO Saqib Zafar said, noting that no major damage was done and only a few children received minor injuries.

However, to ensure that such an incident does not occur again, he said, “I have ordered the school closed, and it will be merged into another school building.”

The DCO has called a meeting of the school management on Thursday to discuss the new arrangements. — Staff Reporter
