PESHAWAR, Nov 25: The NWFP government on Saturday extended the detention period of a leader of Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan, Shahid Noor Afridi, by one month under Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960.

Shahid Noor was arrested last month after he delivered an anti-government speech at a protest demonstration here at Khyber Bazaar. His earlier detention order was issued on Oct 27 whereby he was detained for a period of one month.

His detention orders were signed by the Secretary, NWFP Home and Tribal Affairs department, Javed Iqbal. The government believed that there were reasons that Shahid Noor would indulge in activities “prejudicial to public safety and maintenance of good order in Peshawar district.”

Another ground given for his detention is that in view of the tension prevailing on account of recent attack on Afghanistan by the US and coalition forces his prejudicial activities would exacerbate the situation leading to further worsening of law and order in Peshawar district.

The government has claimed that his provocative speeches would harm national solidarity in the current delicate situation.
