Dokic moves into top 10

Published October 10, 2001

LONDON, Oct 9: Yugoslav Jelena Dokic has entered the top 10 in the WTA rankings for the first time in her career following her victory at the Kremlin Cup.

The 18-year-old’s third title of the year, following wins at the Italian Open in May and the Toyota Cup two weeks ago, allowed her to climb one place to 10 in the standings, overtaking veteran Frenchwoman Nathalie Tauziat.

American Monica Seles, winner of nine Grand Slam trophies, also climbed one place to eight after capturing her 50th career title at the Japan Open in Tokyo.

Martina Hingis, who won the last of her five Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open in 1999, put her ranking in jeopardy following her quarter-final loss to Elena Dementieva last week in Moscow.

Despite her failure at the majors, Hingis has held on to the number one ranking for 209 consecutive weeks.—Reuters
