Cracks on newly-built road

GUJRANWALA, Jan 18: Cracks have appeared within a month on a road built with an expenditure of Rs2 million by the Kamoke district council.

Residents and union council members have demanded that the contractor should be taken to task for using substandard material in the construction of the road.

At a meeting of UC No 160 held here on Saturday under the chairmanship of Nazim Chaudhry Shamshad, participants alleged the contractor had not built a drain along the Tiba Muhammad Nagar road as specified in the plan.

The councillors further alleged that the contractor’s bill had been cleared without checking the site. They blamed that the district council’s account office and sub-engineer concerned were involved in the clearance of the contractor’s bill.

Through a resolution, they demanded that the Punjab chief minister and district Nazim should hold an impartial inquiry against the contractor and he be blacklisted if found guilty.

Meanwhile, PPP (Parliamentarians) MPA-elect Mian Saudul Hassan Dar said he would move the provincial assembly against the defective construction of roads in the district.

SHUTDOWN: The shutdown of gas supply to industrial and commercial units and loadshedding in residential areas have made the lives of people miserable during cold and thick foggy weather conditions.

Taking advantage of the situation, the dealers enhanced the prices of wood, coal, kerosene oil and gas cylinders.

Industrialists strongly protested against the suspension of gas supply and demanded that it should be restored instantly. They said thousands of labourers had been rendered jobless due to the shutdown.

They sent a memorandum to Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited authorities suggesting that a week-wise shutdown of gas supply should be made instead of depriving all industrial and commercial units of gas supply. They said they had to bear heavy financial losses due to the closure of their units. — Correspondent
