Champions fail to qualify

KARACHI, Jan 17: The unexpected happened when Karachi Whites failed in their bid to make the knock-out stage of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship after failing to defeat minnows Dadu in the Group-II fixture at Quaid-i-Azam Park (Steel Town) on Friday.

Set a tough target of 190 in 15 overs to achieve their first victory this season, the reigning champions fell 26 short of their main objective by making only 164 for five despite a 22-ball 55 by burly all-rounder Arif Mahmood and skipper Maisam Hasnain’s 48 off 32 deliveries.

Earlier, Dadu showed remarkable tenacity to reach a commendable 350 in their second innings which went a long away in preventing a fifth straight drubbing.

Meanwhile at UBL Sports Complex, Allied Bank had to settle for three points after their game against Pak PWD was abandoned during lunch because the funeral of a political party’s worker was taking place at a nearby locality in the Federal ‘B’ Area.

Bahawalpur were the only winners of this group after duly completing a nine-wicket win over hosts Multan at Multan Cricket Stadium.
