Delay in naming tennis squad

ISLAMABAD, Jan 16: The Pakistan tennis selectors, meeting in Islamabad Thursday for the second time in less than a week, could not decide on the shape of the Davis Cup team for next month’s tie against New Zealand.

Rashid Khan, secretary of the tennis federation, told Dawn that there was difference of opinion among the selectors on which two players to pick from among Nomi Qamar, Asim Shafik and Shahzad Khan. Aisamul Haq and Aqeel Khan are already on the team.

“Each selector has now been asked to send in his suggestions and we should be able to name the squad by Saturday,” Rashid said.

Those who met Thursday were A. Samad Khan, Jameel Ahmed, Nasir Munir and Rashid himself. The chairman of the selectors, Saeed Hai, Omer Rashid and Rashid Malik were all absent.

The Davis Cup Asia Oceania Group I tie is slated for Feb 7 to 9 in Hamilton, New Zealand.
