KARACHI, Jan 15: The city district government is considering a proposal to set up food streets in all the 18 towns on the pattern of those in Lahore and Islamabad

The proposed food streets, to be set up in collaboration with the private sector, will be required to sell quality local and foreign countries’ food at reasonable rates in an hygienic atmosphere, besides providing entertainment facilities to children.

The interested private sector would be asked to set up their stalls at the proposed food streets, provide adequate parking facilities and make proper security arrangements at the proposed food streets on a BOT (build, operate and transfer) basis.

Though the private parties would, initially, be allowed to do their business at the proposed food streets for a period of five years, their contracts could, however, be extended further.

The city Nazim, Naimatullah Khan, has assigned the task of managing the project to the city government’s enterprise and investment promotion department and appointed district officer Maj Syed Fasihuddin (retired) as incharge of the project.

The Nazim has asked all the town administrations to identify proper locations where the food streets could be set up.

A foreign investment company has offered to set up a ‘food city’ in coastal area. The proposal is currently being evaluated, sources said.
