LAHORE, Jan 7: The Young Doctors Association Punjab chapter has constituted its own three-member committee to ‘probe’ into torture of senior doctors at Gujranwala and identify those responsible for the ugly incident.

Talking to the media at Allama Iqbal Medical College on Monday, YDA leaders including Dr Nasir Bukhari, Dr Amir Bandesha, Dr Abubakr Gondal and Dr Shabbir Warraich said the association had constituted an inquiry committee comprising three doctors to probe into the Gujranwala-incident.

The committee comprises YDA’s senior leaders Dr Amir Bandesha, Dr Javed Iqbal and Dr Shabbir.

Dr Bukhari said the committee had been assigned the task to identify ‘actual culprits’ responsible for the incident.

He said if young doctors were held guilty in the inquiry, the YDA leaders would seek an apology from the Gujranwala district headquarters hospital medical superintendent who was manhandled by association local chapter president Dr Kashif Bilal and his accomplices.

Mr Bukhari said the police were not taking action against the assailants who had allegedly tortured the young doctors in connection with Gujranwala incident.“Actually the incident took place because of delay in the implementation of the service structure draft,” Nasir Bukhari claimed.

He accused the provincial health department of discriminating against young doctors in the aftermath of the Gujranwala incident.

He said the Jinnah Hospital medical superintendent had recommended disciplinary action against dozens of young doctors on the allegation of being absent from duty during recent strike. The health department had also transferred many other young doctors from the provincial capital and some other major districts to far-flung areas to teach them a ‘lesson’ for participating in the strike, he added.

The YDA leaders have also called for an impartial inquiry into the Gujranwala incident and asked the authorities concerned to withdraw the departmental action taken against their colleagues to avoid further confrontation.

They warned of a province-wide agitation if their demands were not met before Jan 10.
