LAHORE, Jan 14: The Punjab University will develop a housing scheme for its employees on Raiwind Road, some 2.5km from Thokar Niaz, in three years.

Some university teachers have expressed their reservations about price and development charges of plots. They say that the price of a plot offered by the university is not less than the market price. Same is the case with development charges, they said. They have urged the authorities concerned to reduce either the price of a plot or development charges.

The university officials, however, claim that the price of a developed one-kanal house near the housing scheme costs over Rs1 million.

The university had bought 2,000 kanals at Rs390 million from the Punjab Co-operatives Board for Liquidation in 2002.

The university is charging Rs300,000 as price of one kanal and about Rs200,000 as development charges from its employees. Smaller five to 15 marla plots are also available. The employees have to pay full amount in instalments till 2003.

The university housing scheme has been divided into two towns —- University Town-I with 523 one-kanal plots and Town-II with 1,100 five to one kanal plots.

The officials claim that all plots in Town-I have been allotted to teachers in BS-18 and above. About 50 per cent plots in Town-II have also been allotted.

They claim that the university has also accommodated those teachers who have been allotted plots in another university housing scheme in Mustafa Town but it could not get possession due to litigation.

They say the applications of retired university teachers will be considered only if some plots in Town-II are not booked.
